From My Balcony -- Riders
oil on canvas

Not too long after we moved to Reston, I glaced out back one day and saw a group of young people on horses. I snatched my camera and asked if I could take a picture. They were on the "Reston common area" that bordered our house in the back. (Sadly, shortly after, they stopped coming through. Our neighbor, who was busily planting grass on common land, objected to the prints their hoofs left in wet weather. Not that she had the right, but she was probably unpleasant about it. Reston area used to be Virginia horse country. During the years we lived there, migration, population growth and building made that a memory. But in the early years, we (part of the problem) could look out the back and see red fox and deer and occasional rabbits. Once I saw a woodchuck who was eating the neighbor's tomatoes. (Served her right.)
